Model-Based Estimates for Farm Labor Quantities

چکیده

The United States Department of Agriculture’s (USDA’s) National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) conducts the Farm Labor Survey to produce estimates number workers, duration workweek, and wage rates for all agricultural workers. Traditionally, expert opinion is used integrate auxiliary information, such as previous year’s estimates, with survey’s direct estimates. Alternatively, implementing small area models integrating survey additional sources information provides more reliable official valid measures uncertainty each type estimate. In this paper, several hierarchical Bayesian subarea-level are developed in support different interest Survey. A 2020 case study illustrates improvement areas sample sizes by using borrowing across subareas. resulting framework a complete set coherent required geographic levels. These methods were incorporated into publication first time 2020.

Farm Income Variability and the Supply of Off-Farm Labor

If farmers are risk averse, greater farm income variability should increase off-farm labor supply. This effect is confirmed for a sample of Kansas farmers. Off-farm employment of farmers and their spouses is also found to be significantly influenced by farm experience, off-farm work experience, farm size, leverage, efficiency, and farm-specific education. In addition, farm operators and spouses...

mortality forecasting based on lee-carter model

over the past decades a number of approaches have been applied for forecasting mortality. in 1992, a new method for long-run forecast of the level and age pattern of mortality was published by lee and carter. this method was welcomed by many authors so it was extended through a wider class of generalized, parametric and nonlinear model. this model represents one of the most influential recent d...

L estimates for quantities advected by a compressible flow

We consider the evolution of a quantity advected by a compressible flow and subject to diffusion. When this quantity is scalar it can be, for instance, the temperature of the flow or the concentration of some pollutants. Because of the diffusion term, one expects the equations to have a regularizing effect. However, in their Euler form, the equations describe the evolution of the quantity multi...

Off-Farm Labor Supply and Fertilizer Use

I develop a two-period stochastic dynamic programming model to explain the interaction between fertilizer use and off-farm labor supply. I use a well-known sample of farmers in the semi-arid tropics of India to test the model. I find that fertilizer use responds strongly to wages in the village labor market and that irrigation raises fertilizer use, while larger farmers use less fertilizer than...

Estimating the Opportunity Cost of Unpaid Farm Labor for U . S . Farm Operators

A farm operator household time-allocation model and data from the Farm Costs and Returns Survey and from other sources were used to derive off-farm wage equations for U.S. farm operators based on production region, size of farm, and farm type. These equations, in turn, were used to impute opportunity costs for farm operators' unpaid labor. Using this new method, instead of the ad hoc method of ...
